There are a lot of video tutorials on this subject, but I cannot find a good old textual version, so I’m making my own.
First of all, you should set up the Sequence appropriately, by using the appropriate preset.
New Sequence > Presets > VR 8192x4096 — Ambisonics
If your camera makes videos in a different resolution than those provided in the presets, you can just edit the resolution by right clicking on the sequence and selecting Sequence Settings…
When you import an Ambisonics audio clip, Premiere will treat it as 4 mono tracks. Before you insert the clip into the sequence, you should tell Premiere to treat it as Ambisonics. …
What do they mean with spatial audio, and what is the U1 chip?
Just two things stand out to me in this new iPhone, and they’re barely footnotes both in the keynote and on the official site.
The new iPhones support “spatial audio” and Dolby Atmos. They’re hardly the first ones to support binaural decoding of Dolby Atmos, but from the way spatial audio is shown graphically in the presentation it looks like they’re referring to a loudspeaker array that lets you hear spatialised sound straight from the phone, without wearing headphones, through some kind of beam-forming.
Every publication can get something wrong, it’s inevitable, and our fast-paced media environment certainly doesn’t help. Handling corrections and errata correctly is of fundamental importance for maintaining the public’s trust.
On this, the New York Times is clearly best in class, corrections are clearly stated in each online article, and there’s a handy page collecting all corrected articles.
I like to read my news via RSS, which results in me seeing stories that are already a bit out of date, and this has led to me noticing a worrying habit in a couple of otherwise reputable newspapers.
On the 24th of December La Stampa, Italy’s third largest newspaper (not counting sports-oriented ones), published an erroneous agency report stating that Julian Assange would be a guest at the next edition of the Sanremo Festival (which is basically Eurovision without the fun). It was quickly debunked by several sources, but instead of issuing a correction, they just deleted the article. Visiting the URL just leads to a 404 page, and the article remained one the first Google results for the query “Assange Sanremo” for several days. I wrote about it here, in Italian. …

In the last week or so my hometown has been filled with ads promoting a new partnership between McDonald’s and Deliveroo.
For me, that mostly meant that Deliveroo was now available in my area, so I immediately downloaded the app, and was greeted by a “not available in your area” screen.
Last week I was in the Maldives shooting underwater 360 videos (with Ambisonics audio! coming soon), and our Ricoh Theta V got flooded at less than 10m, probably because I slightly bumped my head into the underwater case. The case itself is fine, and we tested it empty in a subsequent dive, but the camera itself was pretty clearly beyond recovery.
As I haven’t seen a teardown for this particular model online, I pulled out my Swiss army knife and got to work. The pictures aren’t the best, but I didn’t exactly have a photographic studio at my disposal.
The first step is pulling away the sticker at the bottom, so that the 4 screws are revealed. After that it’s just a matter of prying away the front and back plates, which are simply snapped together. I simply used a knife blade, but there are specialised prying tools available. …
Yesterday I was told I had to design a roll-up poster for advertising a VR demo we’re running. We basically stand around with 3 Gear VRs and let the public try 360 videos with 3rd order Ambisonics of operas, in the foyer of the Teatro Regio opera house in Parma, in the intervals of opera performances. This is a bit too meta for my tastes, but people seem to like it.
Most roll-up posters that I saw for sale online are 1950x850mm, which is both very tall and in an uncomfortable aspect ratio. …
I’ve recently purchased the time lapse application for my Sony A5000. I really don’t see why it wasn’t included, but in the world of cameras €10 isn’t a big deal.
However, it has two annoying limitations: a 999 frames limit, and the videos it creates don’t show up in the mobile app. As I’m stuck up a mountain without a proper computer, I searched for a mobile workaround. …
