How to get Samsung VR for Gear VR outside the US

Because Geo-locking is so last century

Most Oculus Store Gear VR apps are available worldwide, but some are not. I found a (probably outdated) reddit post sampling what’s available and where, but in short, Samsung VR (previously known as Milk VR) and Adventure Time: Magic Man’s Head Games are only available in the USA, and a couple of k-pop music videos are only available in South Korea. The Steam version of the latter doesn’t seem to have any such restriction.

To get around this, we can use a VPN. A simple, user friendly way to do this is to use Hola Unblocker. I hear that running the app makes your device an exit point for their network, which could potentially have some negative consequences, but we only need it once, and then we can remove it.

Once you install the app from the Play Store, launch it.

“My Apps”

From the My Apps screen, select More, scroll through the list of the installed apps down to the Oculus store.

This one

Then simply select the country from which you want to browse the store (America is the default). You’ll see the currency changes as appropriate, and you’ll be able to download Samsung VR, just search for it in the store.

If you don’t have a Gear VR and would just like to see the Samsung VR catalogue, you can install the mobile version of the app, either from the Play Store or from apkmirror (they don’t seem to have the latest version, but it still works).
